When you add front disc brakes to a car that came with drums all round, the rear wheels can lock up before the fronts do. A brake proportioning valve fixes that by limiting pressure to the rear brakes so the car stops straight. This kit (part PV2K-2BM) is used on a long list of classic Ford, Chevrolet and GMC cars and trucks, from 1930s Ford pickups to 1990s GM vans.

Setting it up

Mount the valve close to the master cylinder, run the front line from the disc port and the rear line from the drum port, then bleed the whole system. Wikipedia has a short page on the proportioning valve that explains what it does. Professional installation is recommended.
