The spark plug supplies the spark. It screws into the cylinder head with its tip sitting inside the combustion chamber. When a high voltage pulse reaches the plug, it jumps the small gap between the centre electrode and the ground electrode, and that spark lights the air and fuel mix.

The car battery only gives about 12 volts, which is nowhere near enough to jump that gap under compression. The ignition coil fixes that. It is a transformer with two windings. The engine computer switches current through the primary winding on and off, and every time it cuts the current, the collapsing magnetic field induces a very high voltage in the secondary winding. That voltage goes straight to the plug. On most modern engines there is one coil sitting on top of each plug, called coil-on-plug. Older engines use a coil pack or a single coil with plug leads.

Because the two parts work as a pair, a weak coil can look like a bad plug and a worn plug can kill a coil. A plug with a gap that has grown too wide needs more voltage to fire. The coil works harder to deliver it, heats up and eventually cracks or shorts. That is why many mechanics replace spark plugs and ignition coils together on high-mileage engines, or at least check the coils whenever the plugs come out.

If you want the full engineering background, the spark plug article on Wikipedia covers the history and the physics well.

Iridium vs Platinum vs Copper Spark Plugs

The material on the electrode tip decides how long the plug lasts and how easily it fires.

Copper core (nickel tip): cheap and conducts well, but the soft tip wears quickly. Usually replaced every 20,000 to 30,000 miles (about 30,000 to 50,000 km). Mostly found on older engines.

Platinum: harder than nickel, so the gap stays stable for longer. Iridium plugs often last 60,000 to 100,000 miles. Most modern engines with coil-on-plug ignition came with iridium from the factory.

The safe rule is to fit the same type your engine came with, or an upgrade. Going from iridium back to copper means you will be changing plugs much more often, and on some engines a copper plug can upset the misfire detection. Most of the spark plugs we sell are iridium or iridium platinum for that reason.

Signs Your Spark Plugs or Ignition Coils Need Replacing

These are the symptoms that usually point to the ignition system. Note which cylinder has the misfire code, then swap that coil with the one next to it. Clear the codes and drive. If the misfire moves to the other cylinder, the coil is the problem. If it stays put, look at the plug, the injector or compression on that cylinder. Glow plugs on a diesel can be checked with a multimeter for resistance, and a failed one usually reads open circuit.

When you pull a spark plug, the tip tells a story. Light tan or grey deposits are normal. Black dry soot means a rich mixture. Wet oil on the tip points to worn rings or valve seals. White blistered tips suggest the engine is running too hot or the plug is the wrong heat range. Boost raises cylinder pressure, which makes the spark harder to fire. These engines often need plugs sooner than the brochure says, and coil failure is common on the R56 MINI in particular. If you have added power with a tune, ask your tuner whether a colder plug is needed.

Should You Replace One Ignition Coil or All of Them?

This comes up a lot. If one coil fails on a young engine, replacing just that one is fine. On an older engine, the other coils have seen the same heat and the same hours, so another one often fails within months. Buying a full set, like our 4-piece MINI pack or the 6-piece GT-R set, saves you doing the job twice and keeps all cylinders firing the same way. It also saves you a second round of removing intake parts on engines where the coils are hard to reach.

The same thinking applies to spark plugs. A dead cylinder sends unburned fuel into the exhaust, which can overheat the catalytic converter. It also puts extra strain on engine mounts because the engine runs out of balance. Fix it as soon as you can.

Do iridium spark plugs give more power?

On a healthy standard engine, not really. What they give is a steady spark for much longer and easier starting as they age. On a worn engine with old plugs, fitting new iridium plugs can bring back power that was lost, which can feel like a gain.

Do I need to gap new spark plugs?

Check the gap with a feeler gauge, but most iridium and platinum plugs come pre-set for the engine they are made for. If you do adjust it, bend only the ground strap and never press on the fine centre electrode.

What is the difference between a spark plug and a glow plug?

A spark plug makes a spark to light petrol. A glow plug is a heating element that warms the combustion chamber of a diesel so it can start from cold. Diesels light the fuel through compression, so they have no spark plugs at all.

Why does my engine misfire only in the rain?

That usually means a cracked coil boot or a coil with a crack in its casing. Moisture finds the crack and the spark leaks to the engine instead of reaching the plug. Replacing the coil normally fixes it.

Can a bad spark plug damage an ignition coil?

Yes. We carry these because a full set of four is exactly what most four-cylinder Corollas and Matrixes need for a plug change, and buying them as a matched set beats piecing together four different plugs from four different listings.

If your Corolla's idle has gotten a little rough, you've noticed a hesitation off the line, or your mileage has quietly dropped over the last few thousand miles, worn spark plugs are usually near the top of the suspect list. They're also just a maintenance item — most people aren't replacing these because something broke, they're replacing them because it's time.

Why Iridium Instead of Standard Copper

Iridium is harder and has a higher melting point than the copper or nickel alloys used in cheaper plugs, which lets the center electrode be ground down to a much finer point without wearing away quickly. A finer electrode means a more efficient spark and, in practice, a plug that holds its gap and keeps firing consistently for tens of thousands more miles than a standard plug would. That's really the whole pitch for iridium plugs: you're not getting a dramatically different spark, you're getting one that stays good for a lot longer.

What's in the Box

Four plugs, matched to OE number 90919-01253 (also cross-referenced as Denso 3444 and Denso SC20HR11 — Denso is who actually made the original equipment part for Toyota, for what it's worth). That's a full set for a four-cylinder engine, so you shouldn't need to order more than one of these unless you're doing more than one car.

Confirmed Fitment

This plug is confirmed for the Toyota Corolla (2009-2013) and Toyota Matrix (2009-2013), and also lists as compatible with the 2007-2008 Nissan Sentra. Toyota changed plug specs across different engine families over the years, so if your Corolla or Matrix falls outside 2009-2013, it's worth checking the number stamped on your current plug rather than assuming this is the right one. The same goes if you're cross-shopping this for a different Toyota model entirely — engine displacement and plug design vary enough between Toyota's four-cylinders that a plug correct for a Corolla isn't automatically correct for a Camry or RAV4.

Installing Them

Spark plug replacement on these engines is about as approachable as engine maintenance gets — pull the ignition coil off each cylinder, pull the old plug with a spark plug socket, and thread the new one in by hand before snugging it down with a torque wrench (over-tightening an iridium plug is a real way to crack the porcelain insulator, so don't just muscle it with a ratchet). If you're doing the plugs, this is also a natural time to look at your ignition coils, since a coil that's starting to break down can produce misfire symptoms that look almost identical to a bad plug. We carry a replacement ignition coil if yours is due at the same time.

What a Worn Plug Actually Costs You

Wikipedia's spark plug article gets into the electrode geometry and gap tolerances in more depth than most people need, but the practical upshot is simple: as the electrode erodes, the gap widens, the spark gets weaker, and the engine starts compensating in ways you can feel — rougher idle, softer throttle response, worse fuel economy. None of that shows up as a warning light. It just creeps in slowly enough that a lot of people don't notice until they've already put fresh plugs in and felt the difference.

Specifications

Type: Iridium spark plug, set of 4

OE/OEM part number: 90919-01253

Cross-reference: Denso 3444, Denso SC20HR11

Manufacturer part number: A0283A0002

Condition: New

Warranty: 1 year

Ordering

This set of iridium spark plugs is in stock now. Because Ford offered both gasoline and diesel engine options across these truck and van lines during this era, it's worth confirming your specific vehicle has the 7.3L IDI diesel before ordering, since a gas engine or the later 7.3L Power Stroke direct-injection engine uses different glow plugs entirely.

Signs Your Glow Plugs Need Replacing

Failing glow plugs on an IDI diesel typically show up as noticeably harder cold starts, longer cranking time before the engine fires, white smoke from the exhaust right after starting in cold weather, or a rough idle that smooths out once the engine warms up. Because glow plugs heat the combustion chamber to help ignite diesel fuel before the engine reaches full operating temperature, a weak or failed plug mainly affects starting and warm-up behavior rather than how the engine runs once it's already warm.

Why Replace the Complete Set

Glow plugs on a given engine are installed and used together, so when one has failed from age and heat cycling, the rest have typically seen the same years of service and are not far behind. Replacing all 8 at once rather than testing and swapping individual plugs one at a time means consistent, even heating across all cylinders during cold starts, rather than dealing with an uneven start caused by mixing old and new plugs.

Installation Notes

Replacing glow plugs on the 7.3L IDI means locating each plug along the side of the cylinder heads, disconnecting the glow plug wiring harness, and removing each plug with a glow plug socket before threading in the new ones. Because these plugs have been in place for decades on an older diesel, penetrating oil ahead of time is worth using to avoid a plug breaking off in the cylinder head, which turns a simple swap into a much larger repair.

Ordering Information

This glow plug set is in stock and ships ready to install. Because iridium platinum plugs are designed to hold their gap and firing performance far longer than standard copper plugs, a set that's finally showing these symptoms has usually covered significant mileage, and delaying replacement further tends to affect fuel economy and engine smoothness more noticeably over time, and a worn plug that's ignored long enough can eventually foul badly enough to trigger a misfire code.

Why Iridium Platinum Plugs

Iridium and platinum are harder, more heat-resistant metals than the copper used in standard spark plugs, which lets the electrode stay thinner and more precise for a stronger, more consistent spark over a much longer service interval. For a V6 engine like the Duratec used in these vehicles, consistent spark across all six cylinders matters for smooth idle and even power delivery, which is why iridium platinum plugs are a common upgrade choice even when standard copper plugs would technically still fit.

Installation Notes

Replacing spark plugs on this Duratec V6 means removing the ignition coils or coil packs to access each plug, using a spark plug socket to remove the old plugs without disturbing the surrounding coil boots, and gapping the new plugs to factory specification before installing them. Torquing each plug to spec rather than overtightening is important, since these plugs thread into the aluminum cylinder head and can strip the threads if forced. A dab of anti-seize on the threads, if not already applied to the new plugs, makes the next replacement easier down the road.

Ordering Information

This spark plug set is in stock and ships ready to install. Because plugs wear gradually rather than failing all at once, many drivers don't notice how much smoother their engine runs until after a fresh set is installed. A quick visual inspection of the old plug when it comes out, checking for excessive electrode wear, deposits, or an incorrect gap, can also help confirm that the plug was in fact the source of the symptoms you were noticing.

Why Replacing Worn Plugs on Schedule Matters

Running an engine on worn spark plugs means each cylinder is firing less efficiently, which wastes fuel and can eventually lead to misfires that put extra strain on the ignition coils and catalytic converter. Replacing plugs before they're fully worn out, rather than waiting for a misfire to show up, is a simple way to protect the more expensive components downstream in the ignition and emissions systems.

Installation Notes

Installing this plug means removing the ignition coil or spark plug wire, extracting the old plug with a spark plug socket, and threading the new plug in by hand before tightening it to the manufacturer's specified torque. Because over-tightening a spark plug can crack the insulator or damage the cylinder head threads, using a torque wrench rather than tightening by feel is worth the extra step. It's also worth replacing all of the engine's spark plugs at the same time rather than just the one that's showing symptoms, since the remaining original plugs are typically at a similar point in their service life and tend to follow shortly after.

Ordering Information

This spark plug is in stock and ships ready to install. Comparing the exact numbers stamped or printed on your existing coil against the ones listed here is generally the most reliable way to confirm a correct match before you install anything.

Signs You Need a New Ignition Coil

A misfire that shows up as a check engine light, a rough or uneven idle, hesitation or a noticeable loss of power under acceleration, or reduced fuel economy are all common signs of a failing ignition coil. Because a bad coil on one cylinder often triggers a diagnostic trouble code pointing to that specific cylinder, a code reader can be a useful first step in confirming which coil needs attention.

Why Replacing a Failing Coil Matters

Running an engine with a failing ignition coil means that cylinder isn't burning fuel completely, which wastes fuel, can foul the spark plug faster than normal, and over time can allow unburned fuel to damage the catalytic converter. Replacing a weak coil promptly, rather than continuing to drive on a misfiring cylinder, helps protect the rest of the emissions and exhaust system from that kind of secondary damage.

Installation Notes

Installing this coil means disconnecting the negative battery terminal, removing the electrical connector and mounting bolt from the old coil, and withdrawing it from the spark plug well before installing the new coil in reverse order. Because a loose or corroded connector can mimic the same misfire symptoms as a failing coil, inspecting and cleaning the connector contacts during installation is worth doing while everything is already accessible. If your engine has multiple cylinders misfiring at once rather than just one, it's also worth checking your spark plugs and fuel system before assuming every coil needs replacing, since a single underlying cause can sometimes affect more than one cylinder's readings.

Ordering Information

This ignition coil is in stock and ships ready to install. If your car has started misfiring, hesitating, or throwing a rough idle, a weak or failing ignition coil is one of the more common culprits, and replacing it is usually a straightforward fix once you've confirmed that's actually the problem.

What an Ignition Coil Does

Your car's battery only puts out 12 volts, which isn't nearly enough to jump the gap on a spark plug and ignite the air-fuel mixture in the cylinder. The ignition coil's job is to take that low voltage and step it up dramatically — often into the tens of thousands of volts — timed precisely with each cylinder's firing order. When a coil starts to weaken, the spark it produces gets thinner and less consistent, which shows up as a misfire, a check engine light, reduced fuel economy, or a noticeable loss of power under acceleration. If you want the more technical explanation of the step-up transformer principle behind this, Wikipedia's ignition coil article covers the electromagnetic side of it in more depth than we will here.

What You're Getting

This listing is for one high voltage ignition coil, model BK-6160, classified as a general automotive spare part. It's built to replace a coil that's failed or is showing signs of weakening, restoring proper spark delivery to the cylinder it serves. As with most ignition coils, this is sold as an individual unit rather than a full engine set, so check whether your vehicle needs one coil replaced or several before ordering quantity.

A Note on Compatibility

We don't have a specific vehicle application list attached to this coil beyond the BK-6160 model designation, so we're not going to claim it fits a particular make or model without that confirmation. Ignition coils are one of those parts where the physical connector, mounting style, and electrical specifications have to match your engine exactly — a coil that looks similar but isn't the correct fit either won't seat properly or won't deliver the voltage your engine needs. If you're not already working from a confirmed cross-reference against your vehicle's OEM coil number, the safest approach is to compare this BK-6160 designation against your existing coil or your vehicle's parts catalog before ordering, or reach out through our Request a Part page and we'll help you confirm fitment.

Signs You Might Need One

A failing ignition coil often shows up first as a rough idle or a slight hesitation when you accelerate, especially noticeable at low RPM. As it gets worse, you may notice an intermittent misfire that feels like the engine briefly stumbles, sometimes accompanied by a flashing check engine light, which usually indicates the engine control computer has detected a misfire on a specific cylinder. Some drivers also notice reduced fuel economy, since an engine running on a weak spark doesn't burn fuel as efficiently as it should. None of these symptoms are exclusive to a bad coil — spark plugs, fuel injectors, and wiring issues can cause similar problems — so it's worth ruling out the simpler and cheaper possibilities first if you're not sure.

Installation Notes

Replacing an ignition coil is one of the more approachable jobs in home auto maintenance on most vehicles, particularly on engines with coil-on-plug designs where the coil sits directly above each spark plug. Typically it involves disconnecting the electrical connector, removing a single retaining bolt, and pulling the old coil straight up and off the spark plug before reversing the process with the new one. It's worth inspecting the spark plug underneath while you're in there, since a worn plug can shorten the life of a brand new coil if it's not replaced at the same time.

Specifications

Type: High voltage ignition coil

Model: BK-6160

Classification: Automotive spare part

Condition: New

Why This Is Worth Getting Right

Driving on a failing ignition coil for an extended period can do more damage than the coil itself would cost to replace — unburned fuel from a misfiring cylinder can wash oil off the cylinder walls and, in some cases, damage the catalytic converter if raw fuel keeps making it into the exhaust system. On a single-cylinder engine, these symptoms tend to be more pronounced than on a multi-cylinder engine, since there's no other cylinder firing normally to mask the problem.

Why Replacing a Failing Coil Promptly Matters

Continuing to run an engine on a weak or failing ignition coil can lead to unburned fuel passing through the combustion chamber, which wastes fuel and can foul spark plugs faster than normal. Over time, this also puts extra strain on the starter and battery, since a poor spark makes the engine harder to start and keep running. Replacing the coil before it fails completely helps avoid getting stranded with an engine that won't start at all.

Installation Notes

Installing this coil means disconnecting the negative battery terminal first, removing the electrical connector and mounting hardware from the old coil, and securing the new coil in its place before reconnecting the wiring. Because a loose or improperly seated connector can cause the same misfire symptoms as a failing coil, double-checking that the connection is fully seated after installation is worth the extra minute it takes. It's also a good idea to inspect the spark plug itself while the coil is off, since a worn or fouled plug paired with a new coil can still leave you with the same rough-running symptoms you started with.

Ordering Information

This ignition coil is in stock and ships ready to install. This listing used to reference the 350Z and Altima with the VQ35DE engine, and that was wrong — a copy-paste mistake carried over from a similar listing. The manufacturer's actual fitment data, which is more specific and more reliable than that old title text, points to three vehicles only:

Nissan Sentra — 2000 to 2006

Nissan Frontier — 2005 to 2010

Nissan Titan — 2004 to 2006

If you drive a 350Z or an Altima with the VQ35DE, these are not your plugs, and we'd rather tell you that now than have you order the wrong part. That smaller tip needs less voltage to fire a spark, which tends to translate into a cleaner, more consistent burn and steadier idle. Iridium is also a hard, heat-resistant metal, so these plugs typically hold up longer under normal driving conditions than a basic copper plug, meaning fewer trips back under the hood to swap them out. None of that is marketing fluff — it's just how the metal behaves compared to copper, and it's the whole reason iridium plugs cost a bit more up front but tend to pay you back in longevity.

What You're Getting

This is a complete set of six spark plugs — enough for a full tune-up on your Sentra, Frontier, or Titan in one go, rather than buying plugs one at a time and hoping you remembered the right count. Each plug is built as a direct-fit aftermarket replacement, so your factory gap, thread, and reach specs are already accounted for. Let the engine cool down first — a hot engine block will make the plugs harder to remove and can damage the threads if you're not careful. Pull the ignition coil or wire off one cylinder at a time so you don't mix up the firing order, then use a spark plug socket to back the old plug out. Check the gap on the new plug against your vehicle's factory spec before installing (yes, even pre-gapped plugs are worth double-checking), thread it in by hand until it seats, and finish with a torque wrench rather than muscle — overtightening an iridium plug is a common way to crack the porcelain insulator or damage the threads in the cylinder head. If you're not confident doing this yourself, any general repair shop can install a set like this in well under an hour.

A quick word on spark plug basics for anyone newer to this: a spark plug's job is to ignite the compressed air-fuel mixture in the cylinder at precisely the right moment, and small differences in electrode material and design genuinely do affect how efficiently that happens. If your Cooper S has developed a rough idle, a hesitation under acceleration, or the check engine light has come on with a misfire code, a tired ignition coil is one of the most common causes on this engine, and replacing the full set rather than a single coil is the more reliable fix since the others are usually not far behind.

Why Replace All Four at Once

The R56's turbocharged four-cylinder runs all four coils through the same number of heat cycles and the same years of vibration, so if one has weakened enough to cause a misfire, the rest are generally close behind it in wear even if they haven't failed yet. Replacing only the one that's currently acting up tends to mean you're back in the engine bay again within a few months chasing the next one. A full set means every cylinder is firing on ignition components of the same age and condition, which also makes it easier to rule ignition coils out entirely if a misfire ever shows up again down the line.

What You're Getting

Each coil in this set is a 3-pin connector design rated for 14V, finished in black, and built with high-conductive copper wire and heat-resistant resin to hold up to the heat and vibration in the engine bay. Because MINI used the same turbocharged four-cylinder across several BMW-Group platforms during these years, this coil also crosses over to a wide range of BMW, ALPINA, Rolls-Royce, Citroën, DS, and Peugeot models that share the same engine architecture and OE coil design — if you're servicing one of those instead of a MINI, check your own vehicle's OE ignition coil part number against the list above and in the extended compatibility reference below before ordering.

Signs You Need New Coils

On the R56 specifically, a failing coil usually shows up first as a rough or uneven idle that you can feel through the seat, followed by hesitation or a flat spot when you accelerate. A misfire code (usually a cylinder-specific one) is the clearest signal, but plenty of Cooper S owners run for a while with a coil that's degrading without throwing a code at all, just losing a bit of smoothness and power that's easy to write off as "the car just needs a service." If it's been a while since these were last replaced and you're seeing any of that, it's worth checking before the misfire gets bad enough to affect the catalytic converter.

Installation

Ignition coils on the R56 sit right on top of the spark plugs under the engine cover, so this is a straightforward job with basic hand tools — no special equipment needed. Unclip the connector, remove the retaining bolt, pull the old coil straight up off the plug, and reverse the process with the new one. Doing all four at the same time, rather than swapping just the one that failed, is what makes this worth buying as a set instead of a single unit.

Fit Confidence and Support

Given how many models share this coil design, double-check the OE number on your current coil or your vehicle's parts catalog against the numbers listed above before ordering. This set of four Subaru WRX STI spark plugs is built with iridium platinum tips to give that EJ turbo a clean, consistent spark, and it's sized as a direct replacement so you're not guessing on fitment.

A Direct-Fit Spark Plug Set for the EJ Turbo

This is a 4-pack, matching the EJ 2.5L turbo's cylinder count, and the plugs cross-reference to OE/interchange numbers ILFR6B and SILFR6A, with manufacturer part number A0283A0010. If your Impreza WRX STi originally came with plugs under either of those interchange numbers, this set drops in without modification. It's an aftermarket replacement rather than a Subaru-branded part, but the thread reach, seat, and heat range are matched to factory spec so the swap is straightforward, not a project.

Why Iridium Platinum Instead of Standard Copper

Iridium platinum spark plugs earn their keep on turbocharged engines like the EJ 2.5L, where cylinder pressures and combustion heat run higher than anything a naturally aspirated engine sees. Iridium is a harder, more heat-resistant metal than the nickel alloy used in basic copper plugs, so the center electrode can be ground down to a much finer point. A finer point concentrates the spark, which generally supports more complete combustion and a steadier idle, and iridium plugs tend to hold their shape and resist electrode erosion longer than standard copper plugs under comparable conditions. That doesn't translate into a specific mileage number for your car — that depends on how it's driven, tuned, and maintained — but the material itself is a genuine upgrade over stock-grade copper for a boosted flat-four engine.

It's worth saying plainly what this upgrade isn't: it isn't a tune, and it won't change your power figures on its own. What it does is give the EJ's ignition system a more consistent spark across the RPM range, which matters more on a turbo engine than on a naturally aspirated one, since boost adds cylinder pressure that a tired plug has to work harder to fire through. Think of it as keeping the ignition side of the engine from being the weak link, not as a performance part in its own right.

Signs Your STi's Plugs Are Overdue

Most people don't replace spark plugs on a schedule — they replace them when something starts feeling off. On an EJ turbo, that usually shows up as a rough or uneven idle, a flat spot when you get into boost, worse fuel economy than you remember, or a check engine light throwing a random or cylinder-specific misfire code. Cold starts can get a little rougher too, since a worn plug has a harder time firing consistently before the engine's up to temperature. None of those symptoms are exclusive to bad plugs — coils and injectors can cause similar complaints — but plugs are the cheapest thing to rule out first, and on a turbocharged engine, a weak spark under load is exactly the kind of thing that gets worse before it gets better.

Subaru WRX STI Spark Plugs — Specifications

Part type: Spark plug, sold as a set of 4

Material: Iridium platinum tip

Interchange / OE part numbers: ILFR6B, SILFR6A

Manufacturer part number: A0283A0010

Fitment: Direct replacement, aftermarket — Subaru Impreza WRX STi 2.5L EJ turbo engine

Fuel type: Gasoline

Manufacturer warranty: 1 year

Installation Notes

Swapping spark plugs on the EJ25 is a job most people comfortable with basic hand tools can handle in an afternoon — a spark plug socket, a torque wrench, and a dab of anti-seize on the threads are really all you need. Because the coil packs sit right on top of each plug, you'll spend more time moving intake components out of the way to reach the rear bank than you will actually swapping the plugs. Torque them to your factory service manual spec instead of just cranking them down by feel, since over-tightening an iridium plug can crack the shell or strip the head. If you want a general primer on how spark plugs work and why heat range and gap matter, the Wikipedia entry on spark plugs is a solid, neutral reference to skim before you start.

Confirm Your Fitment First

Subaru revised EJ engine details more than once across model years, so it's worth double-checking against your VIN or the numbers stamped on your old plugs before you order.
