car up. They do not. The springs carry the weight. The job of shocks and struts is to control how fast those springs move. Without them, a car would keep bouncing after every bump like a ball.

Inside a shock absorber is a piston moving through oil. As the wheel goes up and down, the oil is forced through small valves, which turns the energy of the movement into heat. That slows the spring down and keeps the tyre pressed onto the road. Most modern units are gas-charged as well, with nitrogen added to stop the oil foaming when it gets hot on rough roads.

A strut does the same damping job but is also a structural part of the suspension. It holds the spring, carries the top mount, and on most front-wheel drive cars it sets the wheel angle and acts as the steering pivot. That is why a strut is bigger, why it needs a wheel alignment after replacement, and why many people buy it as a complete assembly with the spring already fitted. The shock absorber page on Wikipedia has diagrams if you want to see the inside.

Air suspension replaces the steel spring with a rubber air bag and uses a compressor to fill it. The Escalade, Suburban, Tahoe and Yukon use it at the rear to keep the truck level when loaded. The Mercedes GL uses it at all four corners, with an electronic damping system called ADS. When the bags age, they crack and leak, and the compressor runs constantly until it burns out.

Signs Your Shocks and Struts Are Worn

Worn shocks and struts fade slowly, so most drivers get used to the change and do not notice it. Rough roads, heavy loads and towing all shorten that life.

How to Choose: OE-Style, Coilovers or Air

OE-style replacement

If you want the car to ride the way it did when it was new, pick a direct replacement like the CR-V, Sorento, 4Runner, Durango or Lexus RX units above. They use the factory ride height and mounting points. For front struts, a complete assembly saves time and avoids the risk of compressing an old spring at home.

Coilovers

A coilover is a shock with the spring mounted on a threaded body. You can wind the spring perch up or down to change ride height, and on our kits you can turn a knob through 24 damping settings. They suit people who want a lower stance, sharper handling or a car set up for track days. The trade-off is a firmer ride and the need for an alignment after every height change. Our coilovers cover the 1989-2000 Civic, CRX and Integra, the 1992-2001 Prelude and the 1999-2004 Odyssey.

Air suspension parts

If your vehicle came with air suspension, you have two choices. You can replace the failed air strut with a new air strut, which keeps the self-levelling and the original ride. Or you can convert to steel coils, like our Hummer H2 conversion kit, which removes the air system at that axle for good. Conversion is cheaper over time but you lose automatic levelling under load. On pickups like the Ram 2500 and 3500, add-on air bags work alongside the steel springs to keep the truck level when towing.

How to Make Sure the Part Fits

Find your exact year and trim. Many models changed suspension mid-generation. On the Mini Cooper Convertible, the front struts and springs are tuned to help compensate for that reduced body stiffness, which is also why replacing a worn strut with a properly matched assembly matters more on a convertible than it might on an equivalent hardtop.

Key Features

Cross-referenced to OE numbers 172265 and 172266

Complete strut and coil spring assembly, ready to bolt in

High-strength steel construction with anti-corrosion, rust-resistant coating

Precision oil seals help reduce wear and maintain a secure seal

Specifications

Position: Front, both sides

Quantity: 2 strut and coil spring assemblies per set

Construction: High-strength steel with anti-corrosion coating

Includes: High-tensile springs and dust boots

Condition: New

Compatibility

Fits the 2002-2006 Mini Cooper Convertible. Because the coil spring is packaged together with the strut in this kind of assembly, a sagging or broken spring can also show up as one corner of the car sitting visibly lower than the others.

Why Replace the Complete Strut Assembly

Buying a complete strut and coil spring assembly rather than a bare strut body means you're not stuck compressing and transferring a spring, dust boot, and mounting hardware from the old worn unit onto the new strut, which normally requires a spring compressor and carries real risk if done incorrectly. Starting with a fully assembled unit means the strut, spring, and dust boot are all matched and fresh together, which keeps the front end riding and handling the way it did when the car was new.

Installation Notes

Replacing this assembly means raising and supporting the front of the vehicle, removing the wheel, disconnecting the strut from the steering knuckle and the upper strut mount, and installing the new complete assembly in reverse order before torquing all mounting hardware to specification. Buying the complete assembly means that risk and extra step are handled before the part ever reaches you, and the strut and spring are matched to each other rather than paired up separately. It also means one part number to order instead of sourcing a shock, a spring, and the isolators and boots separately and hoping they're all correctly matched to each other.

Key Features

Cross-referenced to OE numbers 272491 and 272492

Complete assembly with coil spring, dust boot, and mounting hardware included

High-tensile springs sized to restore factory ride height and control

Anti-corrosion, rust-resistant coating on the shock body

Specifications

OE numbers: 272491, 272492

Position: Front, both sides

Includes: Strut, coil spring, dust boot

Material: Steel with anti-corrosion coating

Package: 2 pieces (left and right)

Condition: New

Compatibility

Fits the 2007-2014 Honda CR-V. Because struts wear out gradually, a lot of owners don't notice how much has changed until they drive a vehicle with fresh struts and feel the difference directly. A quick bounce test at each front corner — pushing down on the bumper and watching how many times it rebounds before settling — is a simple way to gauge how much life is left before committing to a full inspection.

Why Replace Both Sides Together

Struts on both sides of the vehicle see essentially the same mileage and road conditions, so when one side is worn enough to need replacement, the other side is usually not far behind. Replacing both front struts as a set, rather than one at a time, keeps the suspension behaving symmetrically and avoids the uneven handling that comes from pairing a worn strut with a fresh one.

Installation Notes

Front strut replacement means disconnecting the strut from the steering knuckle and the upper strut mount inside the engine bay or under the hood liner, and because the assembly comes pre-loaded with the spring, there's no need for a spring compressor during installation — that risk was already handled before the part shipped. This listing is for a pair of rear shock absorbers built for the 1996-2002 Toyota 4Runner — left and right, sold together, no modifications needed to install them. We carry these because this generation of 4Runner is still everywhere on the road, and a truck this age has almost certainly outlived the damping ability of its factory shocks, even if the ride still feels "okay" most of the time.

Why Rear Shocks Wear Out on an Older 4Runner

Shock absorbers don't hold your truck up — that's the spring's job. What a shock does is control the spring, slowing down how fast it compresses and rebounds so the wheel stays in contact with the road instead of bouncing off it. Every time you hit a bump, the shock is working, and after two decades of that on a 4Runner from this era, the internal seals and oil have simply done their job for as long as they can. You'll usually notice it first as extra body roll in corners, a nose-dive under braking, or that floaty feeling where the rear end keeps moving after you're already past the bump. None of that is dangerous on its own, but it does mean your tires aren't tracking the road the way they're supposed to, and stopping distances get longer than they should be.

What You're Getting

This is a pair of rear shock absorbers — one for the left side, one for the right — specifically for the 1996-2002 Toyota 4Runner. The interchange and OE part number is 37157, so if you've seen that number come up while cross-shopping parts, this is the same component. Both shocks in the pair are gas-charged, which is what gives them a firmer, more controlled feel than an older oil-only design, especially when the truck is loaded down with cargo or gear.

On the build side, the piston rods are chrome-plated and micro-polished, which is mainly there to fight corrosion and keep the seal surface smooth over years of use — that's usually where a cheaper shock starts to leak first. The piston seal itself is Teflon-bonded, which cuts down on internal friction so the shock doesn't run hot and lose its damping consistency on a long drive. The spring seat is welded all the way around rather than just tacked on, which matters more than it sounds like once you've had a shock develop a rattle from a seat that was never fully secured. The valving is speed-sensitive, meaning it responds differently to a slow body roll in a corner versus a sharp hit from a pothole, which is exactly how the factory-style shock on this platform was designed to behave.

Specifications

Interchange / OE Part Number: 37157

Placement on Vehicle: Left & Right, Rear

Fitment: 1996-2002 Toyota 4Runner

Package Includes: 2 x rear shock absorbers (pair)

Construction: gas-charged, chrome-plated piston rod, Teflon-bonded piston seal, fully welded spring seat

Installation

These bolt in using the factory upper and lower mounting points, so there's no cutting, drilling, or adapting involved. As with any suspension work, it's worth torquing the mounting bolts to spec once the truck's weight is back on the wheels rather than while it's still up in the air, since that's when the bushings seat correctly.

Warranty and What Happens If Something's Off

These rear shocks are backed by a limited lifetime warranty, so you're covered well past the point where a cheaper part would have already failed. shut up, or a suspension warning light that just won't clear on your GM full-size SUV or truck, a worn air spring is usually the culprit. This Cadillac Escalade air suspension strut pair is a direct-replacement rear strut built for the GM full-size platform, with the air spring already integrated into the strut body so you're not stacking a separate airbag onto a tired shock. It's sold as a rear left and right pair, brand new (not remanufactured), and it drops in without cutting, drilling, or modifying anything on the vehicle.

Signs Your Cadillac Escalade Air Suspension Strut Is Failing

Air struts don't usually fail without warning. The rubber sleeve that holds air eventually cracks, dries out, or develops a pinhole leak, and once that happens the symptoms show up fast. The most common one is a rear end that sits noticeably lower than it should, especially after the vehicle has been parked overnight. You might also notice the air compressor running far more often than normal, sometimes even with the truck off, as it tries to keep up with a leak it can't win against. A rough, bouncy ride in the back, a "service ride control" or suspension warning light on the dash, clunking over bumps, or the vehicle leaning to one side are all classic tells. None of that is dangerous by itself, but a strut that's lost its air spring can also cause the rear end to squat hard under acceleration or dip under braking, which changes how the truck handles when it matters.

Why Replace Both Rear Struts as a Pair

It's tempting to just replace the side that's obviously leaking, but there's a good reason we sell these as a matched rear pair. Air struts on the same axle wear on a similar timeline, since they've been cycling the same miles, load, and temperature swings since the factory installed them. If one side is bad, the other has usually been quietly losing air-tightness too, just not enough yet to trip a warning light. Replacing only one side often means you're back under the truck in a few months doing the same job on the other corner, and in the meantime a mismatched pair can leave the rear end sitting uneven. Doing both at once restores even ride height side to side, and it's less labor in the long run than paying for the job twice.

Air Suspension vs. Conventional Coil Springs

A conventional coil spring holds ride height with a fixed steel spring — simple and reliable, but the stiffness doesn't change no matter what you're carrying. Air suspension replaces that steel spring with a sealed, air-filled rubber bladder built into the strut, and the onboard compressor adds or bleeds air to adjust ride height on the fly. That's why factory air suspension on these SUVs and trucks keeps the rear end level whether you're driving empty or towing a loaded trailer. The tradeoff is that there's more to age out — seals, air lines, and the rubber sleeve itself — which is exactly why these struts eventually need replacing even on a truck that's otherwise in good shape.

Vehicle Fitment

This rear air suspension strut pair fits the following GM full-size applications:

Cadillac Escalade (rear), 2002-2014

Cadillac Escalade ESV (rear), 2003-2014

Cadillac Escalade EXT (rear), 2002-2013

Chevrolet Avalanche 1500 (rear), 2002-2006

Chevrolet Avalanche (rear), 2007-2013

Chevrolet Suburban 1500 (rear), 2000-2014

Chevrolet Tahoe (rear), 2000-2014

GMC Yukon (rear), 2000-2014

GMC Yukon XL 1500 (rear), 2000-2014

These are aftermarket struts, so as always, confirm your OEM number against the interchange list below before ordering. This kit gives you 24 clicks of rebound damping, so you can go from a comfortable daily-driver ride to a firm, track-ready setup without swapping parts. The body is fully threaded, which means you adjust ride height independently of preload — turn the perch, not the whole strut, and you can drop the car anywhere from 1 to 3 inches below stock height depending on how aggressive you want the stance. Whether you're building a clean street car, a weekend autocross toy, or a Civic that sees the occasional track day, you have the range to set it up the way you actually drive it.

The springs are 55CrSi high-strength cold-wound, heat-treated steel — the same spring alloy used in a lot of higher-end performance suspension because it holds its rate consistently instead of sagging after a season of hard use. Up front you're looking at an 8kg/mm rate (448 lbs/in), and out back 5kg/mm (280 lbs/in), which is a reasonably aggressive but still streetable rate split for this platform. The shock bodies and mounting hardware are T-6061 billet aluminum with an anodized finish, so they're lighter than steel OEM-style housings and they won't rust out on you the way old stamped-steel struts do after a few Midwest winters.

Damping comes from a twin-tube design on both the front and rear units, which tends to run a little quieter and more forgiving over rough pavement than a harsh single-tube racing shock, while still giving you real control once you start pushing the 24-way adjuster toward the firmer end. Front and rear top mounts use rubber bushings rather than solid spherical bearings, which keeps some of the factory-like noise and vibration isolation intact — a nice compromise if this car still has to do daily-driver duty.

Important: Confirm You Have the Fork-Type Rear Bracket Before You Order

This is the part we don't want you to skip. Every time you hit a pothole, a speed bump, or an uneven patch of highway, the shock is supposed to control how fast the spring compresses and rebounds. As the internal seals and valving wear down over tens of thousands of miles, that control disappears gradually, so most people don't notice until the ride has gotten genuinely rough, the rear end feels loose in corners, or a passenger finally says something about how much the back seat bounces.

Worn rear shocks on a Durango or Grand Cherokee usually show up as one or more of these: a wallowy, floaty feeling in the back on the highway, nose-diving or rear squat under braking and acceleration, uneven tire wear on the rear axle, a knocking or clunking noise over rough pavement, or a vehicle that just feels less planted than it used to.
